Dirty Politics: Harmonized Sales Tax

Posted in City by capitalcitycycles on November 5, 2009

Last summer our  provincial government decided that they would, despite a campaign promise, abolish the PST/GST system in British Columbia and instate the HST which is a 12% goods and services tax across the board.

Bicycles, parts and safety gear have been exempt from PST for a very long time as cycling is an activity that should be encouraged, not taxed.  The price of bicycles will essentially go up 7% with the new tax.   The governments has been spinning the story badly.  Government websites are not a legitimate source of information if you do decide to look further into this.

For more information regarding this, and a petition that I highly encourage everyone to sign, check out Saanich MLA Lana Popham’s site at or stop by the shop to sign the petition in person.
